Adding Content to Your Portal

Adding Content to Your Portal

The Veracity Launch LMS lets you add many types of content to your portal!

To add content to your portal…
  1. Log-in to your portal.

  2. In the left menu, in the ADMIN section, click the Manage Content button.

  3. In the Manage Content page, click the Add Content to this Portal button.

The next screen shows a list of options for adding different types of content to the portal:
  1. SCORM/xAPI Course — Upload a course you packaged in an authoring tool.
  2. Files — Upload a file like a video, image, or PDF.
  3. Link — Add a link, and track when learners visit it.
  4. YouTube Video — Link to a YouTube video, and track learner activity.
  5. External xAPI Content — Link to remote, xAPI-enabled content.
  6. Certificate Course — Link to a course and let learners upload a completion certificate.
  7. Content by Proxy — Link to content, which Launch will serve, as a proxy.
  8. Learning Path — Create a linear or random-access “playlist” of content.
  9. Manual Entry — Manually define the entire content record. Advanced users only!

Read this article on Content Format Support for a full description each type.

Launch records Enrollments, Attempts, and Launches automatically and shows this data in the Attempt Status Report and Content Status Report. If you want to track more progress data, then you can have Launch send xAPI statements to an LRS that you set under Manage Integrations.

How to Upload a SCORM or xAPI Course

Veracity Launch lets you add course packages exported from any authoring tool that supports the SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI, or cmi5 formats. After you upload the course package, Launch unpacks it and serves the files to learners.

To upload SCORM or xAPI course package to your portal…
  1. Log-in to your portal.

  2. In the left menu, in the ADMIN section, click the Manage Content button.

  3. In the Manage Content page, click the Add Content to this Portal button.

  4. In the Add Content page, click the Upload SCORM or xAPI card.

  5. In the Upload Learning Content page, click the Add Files button, and then select the package to upload. You can choose up to ten packages to bulk upload. Each package should be a ZIP file.

  6. When you finish adding files and Launch finishes staging them, click the Upload button.

  7. After all files upload, you’ll see buttons to Edit Settings*, Upload Image, and manage Enrollments for each file. Alternatively, you can also do each of these from the Administration menu later.

  8. When ready, click the Close button.
Notes
*For most packages, Launch automatically chooses the correct settings.

How to Upload a File

Veracity Launch supports uploading individual files such as videos*, images, or PDFs. To add any of these types of files to your portal…
  1. Log-in to your portal.

  2. In the left menu, in the ADMIN section, click the Manage Content button.

  3. In the Manage Content page, click the Add Content to this Portal button.

  4. In the Add Content page, click the Upload Files card.

  5. In the Upload Learning Content page, click the Add Files button, and then select the file to upload.

  6. After you add a file, click the Upload button.

  7. After the file uploads, you’ll see buttons to Edit Settings, Upload Image, and manage Enrollments. Alternatively, you can also do each of these from the Administration menu later.

  8. When ready, click the Close button.
Notes
*A Note about Video Files (MP4)

If you upload an MP4 video file and you choose the Veracity Video Player as the Player Type when you Edit Settings for the file, then Launch can automatically send xAPI statements about video activity to your LRS.

How to Link to External Content

Veracity Launch can track if a learner viewed an external link. To add a link to your portal…
  1. Log-in to your portal.

  2. In the left menu, in the ADMIN section, click the Manage Content button.

  3. In the Manage Content page, click the Add Content to this Portal button.

  4. In the Add Content page, click the Track a Link card.

  5. On the Track an External Link page, in the Tracked URL field*, enter the address of the link.

  6. In the Title field*, enter the name.

  7. Change any other settings. Alternatively, you can also change them from the Administration menu later.

  8. When ready, click the Track Link button to save.
Notes
*The Tracked URL field and Title field are mandatory.

How to Link to a YouTube Video

Veracity Launch lets you upload a link to a YouTube video. The Veracity video player tracks learner activity, such as played, paused, and more.

To add a link to a YouTube video to your portal…
  1. Log-in to your portal.

  2. In the left menu, in the ADMIN section, click the Manage Content button.

  3. In the Manage Content page, click the Add Content to this Portal button.

  4. In the Add Content page, click the Track YouTube card.

  5. In the Track a YouTube Video page, in the YouTube Video Link field*, enter the address of the video.

  6. In the Title field*, enter the name.

  7. Change any other settings. Alternatively, you can also change them from the Administration menu later.

  8. When ready, click the Track Video button to save.
Notes
*The YouTube Video Link field and Title field are mandatory.
Veracity Launch opens the video using its built-in video player and automatically sends xAPI statements about video activity to your LRS.

How to Link to External xAPI Content

If you want to add content on another server (e.g., a H5P page), then you can still track the xAPI it sends when learners open it remotely from your portal.

To add external xAPI content to your portal…
  1. Log-in to your portal.

  2. In the left menu, in the ADMIN section, click the Manage Content button.

  3. In the Manage Content page, click the Add Content to this Portal button.

  4. In the Add Content page, click the Track External xAPI card.

  5. On the Track xAPI page, in the Tracked URL field*, enter the address of the external content. Optionally, also enter a unique xAPI ID.

  6. In the Title field*, enter the name.

  7. Change any other settings. Alternatively, you can also change them from the Administration menu later.

  8. When ready, click the Track xAPI button to save.
Notes
*The Tracked URL field and Title field are mandatory.

How to Link to an External Certificate Course

Veracity Launch lets you link to a certificate course that runs on a different server than your portal. When complete, the portal then asks the learner to upload a local copy of the certificate.

To add this type of content to your portal…
  1. Log-in to your portal.

  2. In the left menu, in the ADMIN section, click the Manage Content button.

  3. In the Manage Content page, click the Add Content to this Portal button.

  4. In the Add Content page, click the External Certificate card.

  5. On the External Certificate Upload page, in the External URL field*, enter the address of the external content.

  6. In the Title field*, enter the name.

  7. Change any other settings. Alternatively, you can also change them from the Administration menu later.

  8. When ready, click the Create button to save.
Notes
*The External URL field and the Title field are mandatory.
When the learner completes the course, Launch asks them to upload their completion certificate to your portal by clicking the Choose File button and then clicking the Submit for Credit button.

How to Link to External Content by Proxy

If you have a protected and non-public course or video not on the same server as your Launch portal, then you can still use Launch to enroll your learners and serve the content remotely. Launch will manage the completion data and can also track learner activity with xAPI sent to an LRS.

You can use this if you have a lot of legacy courses produced for a defunct authoring tool or LMS and can’t re-package or move the files.
Notes
Secure, Yet Simple — When you configure Launch to get content from another server by proxy, you can secure your content by adding a custom header to the request (see Step 6), invisible to the learner.
Notes
Flexible, Yet Robust — Because the proxy feature serves remote content through Launch, that content obeys “same-domain” website rules, so you can still transparently play a SCORM package even though it’s on another server.
To link to content using Lauch as a proxy server…
  1. Log-in to your portal.

  2. In the left menu, in the ADMIN section, click the Manage Content button.

  3. In the Manage Content page, click the Add Content to this Portal button.

  4. In the Add Content page, click the Proxy Content card.

  5. On the Track External Proxy page, in the URL field*, enter the path to the parent directory of the asset.

  6. If the request needs additional information (e.g., Authorization: Basic <credentials>), then you can add it in the Proxy Headers. Click the Add Header button and enter the Header Name and Value.

  7. When ready, click the Track Link button to save.
Notes
*The URL field is mandatory.
If the content is a course with a manifest (e.g., imsmanifest.xml, tincan.xml, or cmi5.xml), then Launch will automatically extract the properties of the course when it adds the content to your portal. You can inspect these properties by going to Manage Content, clicking the Actions menu button in the lower-left of the card for the new content, and selecting Advanced Edit from the popup menu. The card for the new content will also have the extra caption…

SCO
Remote Data: <Parent URL>

If you change the organization or resources in the manifest, then you can refresh the content without adding it again. In the Manage Content page, in the card for the course, click the Action menu button in the lower-left, and select the Reload Manifest option.

How to Build a Learning Path

You can build a sequence of content — like a “playlist” — made from pieces already in your portal…
  1. Log-in to your portal.

  2. In the left menu, in the ADMIN section, click the Manage Content option.

  3. In the Manage Content page, click the Add Content to this Portal button.

  4. In the Add Content page, click the Create Learning Path card.

  5. In the Create a New Learning Path page, you'll see a form with two columns: the left column is the typical Learning Path Attributes section, the right column is the Sequence Content Records section.

  6. In the Learning Path Attributes section, enter the Title* of the learning path, a Description, and any Tags.

  7. In the Playback Mode drop-down, select either Linear (learner must complete in order) or Free (learner can play any item anytime).

  8. Adjust the Settings checkboxes (PublicSelf-Enrollment, and Allow Reattempt) as needed.

  9. In the Sequence Content Records section, click the Add Step to Path button.

  10. In the Add Step to Path pop-up dialog box, click any pieces of content to add. You'll see them included in the page behind the box.

  11. In the Add Step to Path pop-up dialog box, when finished, click the Close button.

  12. In the Selected Sequence list box, you can drag the pieces to re-order them, or click the Delete (red trash can) button to remove them.

  13. When finished, click the Save Learning Path button.
When a learner enrolls and launches the learning path, they see a list of the pieces of content. If the Playback Mode is Linear, then the pieces are dimmed and locked until the learner completes the previous piece. The top of the page shows the learner's percent completion as well as an indicator of their Overall Learning Path Progress.

Notes
*The Title field is mandatory.
If you select the Public checkbox and any piece of content you add is not Public, then the pieces will show a “Private module in public path" warning in the Selected Sequence list box.

How to Make a Manual Entry

The other methods of adding content use specific variations of a form to let you enter information about the content you want to add. If the content is very complex and you are very confident you can describe all its properties yourself, then you can use this all-encompassing form to add content to your portal.
  1. About
    1. Title*
    2. Short Description — A short description of the content
    3. Long Description — A longer description of the content; this appears on the Content Details view; this field can use Markdown for styling
    4. Tags — Add a tag
    5. Public — Launch can serve this content to anonymous learners at a special URL
  2. Playback
    1. Launch URL* — The URL link that the learner will view
    2. Player Type — How the portal will present the content: web browser default, tracked link, Veracity video player, certificate upload, or Veracity PDF viewer
    3. Launch Type — How Launch will display this content to the learner: popup, redirect, frame, or manual
    4. Image Fit — How Launch will present the content image: contain or cover
  3. Data Tracking
    1. Learning Standard — The data learning technology standard the content uses: none/other, cmi5, TinCan/xAPI, SCORM 2004, or SCORM 12
  4. xAPI Configuration
    1. ID* — A URI that represents this activity
    2. Track Session — Track initialized and terminated from the server, for content that cannot do so itself — on, by default
    3. Sign xAPI Statements — Add a digital signature to xAPI statements from this content
    4. Rewrite Statements — Modify xAPI statements from this content to conform to best practices, possible only for logged-in learners — on, by default
    5. Automatic Client-side xAPI Tracking — Automatically instrument embedded media with xAPI tracking — on, by default
  5. Attempts and Enrollment
    1. Allow Self Enrollment — Learners enroll themselves into this course content — on, by default
    2. Allow Reattempt — Learners may start a new session of this content after completing, or abandon and restart their current session — on, by default
To manually add content…
  1. Log-in to your portal.

  2. In the left menu, in the ADMIN section, click the Manage Content button.

  3. In the Manage Content page, click the Add Content to this Portal button.

  4. In the Add Content page, click the Manual Entry card.

  5. On the Register an Activity page, in the Title field*, enter the name of the content.

  6. In the Launch URL field*, enter the address of the content.

  7. In the xAPI Configuration section, in the ID field*, enter the URI for the content.

  8. Change any other settings. Alternatively, you can also change them from the Administration menu later.

  9. When ready, click the Register button to save.
