Enrollments, Launches, and Attempts

Enrollments, Launches, and Attempts

As the LMS administrator, you should know the differences between Enrollments, Launches, and Attempts to make full use of Veracity Launch. They are all steps the learner takes, and the LMS automatically processes and stores data about each, but you must still understand their meaning and inter-relationship.

Notes
Don’t confuse these steps a learner takes in the LMS with similar-sounding xAPI activities in the LRS:  registration, launched, and attempted. They usually do not align.

Enrollments

In Veracity Launch, an Enrollment is the step that gives a learner access to a course or other content. It sets their expectation of completion, start and end dates, and one or more attempts. You can enroll one or more learners at the same time in a single piece of content. You can enroll one or more learners in a single piece of content with an e-mail invitation. You can also set-up a single piece of content to let learners self-enroll (on the content card in your portal, they will see a button labelled Enroll instead of Launch). To learn more about the different ways to enroll learners in the LMS, read this article on Assigning Content to Learners.

In the ADMIN > Manage Content page, when you change to Table View, you can see a column that shows whether each piece of content allows Self-Enrollment.

When you run a Content Status Report for a piece of content, in the Enrollment column, the learner can be: Not Started (before the start date), Active, or Expired (past the end date).

Launches

On a content card in your portal, when a learner clicks the Launch button, the LMS records the action as the beginning of an attempt (more about that below). If the learner interrupts the activity but doesn’t terminate it (Status = In Progress), then the card shows a Resume button.

In the Manage Content page, when you change to Table View, you can see a column for Launch Count for each piece of content.

Notes
Why is Launch Count sometimes higher than the total of enrolled learners?
If the content allows reattempt, then the few learners that Restart even once can quickly drive the Launch Count much higher!

Attempts

An Attempt is an instance when a learner launched and terminated a piece of content. You can edit a piece of content to allow learners to reattempt.

When the learner terminates a piece of content (Status = Completed, Passed, or Failed) and the content allows reattempt, then the content card in your portal shows them a Restart button. In the ADMIN > Manage Content page, when you change to Table View, you can see a column that shows which pieces of content allow Reattempt.

To see a list of the number of attempts by a single learner in all pieces of content they launched, go to ADMIN > Manage Learners and select Learner Status Report from the Actions menu for a learner. To see a list of the number of attempts by all learners in a single piece of content, go to ADMIN > Manage Content and select Content Status Report from the Actions menu for a piece of content. To see a list of the number of attempts by all learners in all pieces of content, go to ADMIN > Reports > Attempt Status Report page: this report also lets you filter by learner and content profile fields!

Notes
Why is Launch Count sometimes higher than total Attempts?
If learners launched a piece of content but closed the browser window before they attempted it, then the LMS won’t show matching Launch Count and total Attempts for that piece of content.  If you unenroll and re-enroll learners in a piece of content that they launched, then their Attempts will reset to zero but the Launch Count for that piece of content won't go down.
